Reading
Literature Circles are introduced using different novels. Individual novel are explored
using journaling and small group discussion. Basal instruction is also a part of our
curriculum. Students do weekly poetry journals to improve fluency and encourage
appreciation of different styles of poetry.
Math
Place Value and Adding and Subtracting of larger numbers are taught.
Multiplication and Division of single digits is strengthened and introduced for two
and three digit numbers. Students also learn about fractions and basic geometry.
English
Basic grammar is taught including the parts of speech, sentence and paragraph
structure. Four-Square Writing is introduced and used to create persuasive, expository
and narrative writings. Writing Workshop is used to explore different purposes for
writing, the writing process, and editing skills.
Science
These units include learning about natural resources and recycling, investigating
properties of matter, electricity and magnets, animals, and the weather.
Social Studies
We study maps, and explore regions of the United States including natural resources,
agriculture, industry, climate, and culture. We also have an in depth look at Illinois,
which includes a trip to Springfield, and we explore the three branches of government.
Religion
In religion we use the Faith Alive series. We also discuss the Beatitudes and the Lord’s
Prayer in more depth. Students memorize Bible verses each week.
Community Service
In addition to supporting school sponsored community service projects, our class does
two other projects. At Christmas time we write stories about a stuffed animal that we
have purchased. These stories are typed, illustrated, and bound. We wrap them up with
the stuffed animal and give them as gifts. In the past we have given them to Easter
Seals, Goldie Floberg, and MELD. We also have a reading incentive program
sponsored by the Zonta Women’s Organization. Our class earns money through
accelerated reader points. We donate this money to Heifer International to purchase
different animals for communities in need.
