We take a team approach to teaching in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. Mr. Van Daele teaches math, Mrs. Schulenburg
teaches language arts, and I teach reading to the all three grades. The students travel to each teacher's room for
their particular subject. This allows the students an opportunity to move around during the school day. Major
emphasis is placed on these three subjects at the school.
Science: Students begin the year with an in depth study of constellations and the solar system. As part of this unit,
the students study a specific constellation and make a poster of their constellation. We also study sound and light
waves as well as small machines. In the spring we work with plants and learn about photosynthesis.
Reading: Our reading program revolves around the reading workshop. Children are encourages to read books they
enjoy while exploring different literary genres. In fourth grade we focus on the skills used by good readers. The
students keep journals in which they use the skills we have discussed. Fifth graders review the skills of good readers
and learn about figurative language as well as literary genres, fact or fiction and point of view. Like the fourth graders
they then translate their new found skills to their journals. In sixth grade we review all of the skills learned previously
and focus on journaling about what we read. Some if the things they would write about in their journals include
authors they enjoy and why, how the story would be changed written from a different point of view and why authors
use certain words to convey a message.
