Mathematics:
The 6th grade mathematics curriculum is a completion and extension of all basic mathematics concepts with an
additional introduction to integers. Children finishing 6th grade should also have a clear understanding of
standard and metric measurements, ratios, proportion, and probability. In geometry their knowledge should
include working with formulas to determine circumference, area, and volume.
English:
Writing skills are emphasized using Six Traits focused instruction and assessment. Sentence structure and
types are reinforced, as are parts of speech and their purpose in the sentence. Academic vocabulary is
studied.
Reading:
Comprehension skills and vocabulary acquisition is emphasized. Students read from novels as well as shared
short texts. Reader’s Theater, poetry, Book Talks, and Accelerated Reader are also utilized.
Social Studies:
Ancient societies are studied and include Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome. Exploration
includes textbook reading, research, projects, and presentations which incorporate technology.
Geography and map skills are also reinforced.
Science:
Units of study include cells and microorganisms, earth’s structure, properties of matter, oceanography, and
forces and motion. Our Science Lab and Smartboard are used for experimentation and investigation.
Additional information:
* Community service projects support our school, church, families, and local community.
* Field trips include a fall outdoor education trip, a winter trip to Chicago for a museum visit and theater, and a
weekend teambuilding retreat at the end of the school year.
